Niamh Fay

Hello, I’m Niamh Fay, but in the ring, I’m known as “Fast Hands Fay.”

I come from the small village of Ballyboughal in Co. Dublin. My journey in boxing began when I was just nine years old, inspired by my dad, who was a coach at our local boxing club. From those early days, I found my passion and knew this sport was going to own my heart.

Training full-time with the Irish team at the Sport’s Ireland Campus is both challenging and rewarding. My dreams are big, with the ultimate goal of competing in the LA 2028 Olympics. Along the way, I aim to bring home medals from the World and European Championships. Every day is a step towards these dreams, fuelled by passion and determination.

Niamh Fay is a European Championship medal winner.

The Dubliner stepped relatively easily onto the podium on Tuesday morning after the proposed medal clash was cancelled.

Fay was down to box the second seed Stanmira Petrova in an eagerly anticipated quarter-final but the Bulgarian pulled out injured, giving the Phoenix Ballyboughal Boxing star a walkover in the process.

It means Fay wins bronze at the very least and becomes the first Team Ireland fighter to mine precious continental metal at this years Belgrade hosted tournament.

The medal win is 21-year-old’s first at an Elite senior competition but the florescent sock-loving all-action puncher, who beat tough Russian opposition to get the quarters, is now a three-time European medal winner having won gold at Youth and Under-22 level previously.

NEWLY-CROWNED European U22 boxing champion Niamh Fay says she is now focused on qualifying to compete for Ireland at the World Championships later this year.

In scenes reminiscent of 2019 when she won the European Youth title, the village of Ballyboughal came out in force last Thursday evening to welcome home one of their own as Niamh returned triumphant from Croatia having claimed gold in the 54kg division at the European U22 Championships.

‘Fast Hands’ Fay, as she is aptly known, was at her imperious best in Croatia as she eased past Ukraine number one Anastasia Lesinska by a 12-point margin last Wednesday. Next up was Finland number one Joanna Hakarainen who she beat by 11 points, before defeating Great Britain’s top bantamweight Grace Olivia Holmes in Sunday’s semi by nine points.

In the final the girl from Phoenix of Ballyboughal Boxing Club – just 19 years of age – proved too quick and too powerful for Italian champion Sharon Prisco, winning the first two rounds with ease as Prisco received a standing count in round two, before fending off a late comeback from the Italian in round three.

Speaking to the Fingal Independent, Niamh said she is delighted to be boxing regularly once again following a stop-start couple of years due to Covid, and the welcome home she received on Thursday was the icing on the cake at the end of a great week in her young career.

Niamh Fay made a brave second-round exit from the European Senior Championships in Montenegro on Sunday.

The reigning European U22 champion from the Phoenix of Ballyboughal club Fay was first of the Irish into the ring at the prestigious event last Friday and she made light work of Italy’s Sirine Charaabi in the 54kg division on a day when Olympic gold medallist Kellie Harrington also advanced.

Fay, who had succeeded Charaabi as U22 bantamweight champion earlier in the year, was too quick and too strong for her opponent and she got a unanimous 5-0 verdict from the judges.

However, the Ukrainian opponent proved just too strong for Fay as she looked to book her place in the quarter-finals.
